Kelvin Sampson has been able to succeed in his efforts to find another point guard as a top high school star commits to the Houston Cougars program.
Kingston Flemings got his support to enter the 2026 NBA Draft from Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson recently, but it led to a curious question about who would replace the point guard in the Houston team, especially with plans needed for the long term.
Flemings was an integral part of Houston’s charge under Sampson, and is considered one of the hottest talents in the NBA Draft, even if you listen to the experts.
But it appears Sampson has caught a break in his approach to try and replace Flemings, with one player out of high school announcing his commitment to the Houston program.
Tyus Thomas’ Connection to Dedan Thomas Jr.
As mentioned above, Tyus Thomas is the younger brother of Dedan Thomas Jr., who made the switch to the University of Houston after his stint at LSU, and it is likely that he had a major say in his kid brother making the commitment to the Cougars to play next to his elder brother.
Dedan’s commitment to play under Sampson even under the toughest conditions likely played a role in his brother’s thinking when it came to committing to the Houston program.
