Michigan Basketball Roster Gets Another Boost As Freshman Announces Decision

Just a few months after winning the national championship, the Michigan Wolverines received their biggest setback when head coach Dusty May departed to take the job with the Dallas Mavericks.

The departure, however, hasn’t changed the decision of Michigan signee Lincoln Cosby. The incoming freshman has decided to stay put in Ann Arbor, according to On3’s Joe Tipton on Friday.

Cosby joins guards Elliot Cadeau, Trey McKenney, center Moustapha Thiam and forward JP Estrella, who have decided to stay with the program despite the coaching change.

The Wolverines have handed the reins to interim head coach Mike Boynton Jr. after May’s abrupt departure. With the transfer portal opening on July 24, Boynton will hope to lock in as many recruits as possible and navigate the program through this tough water.

Cosby, a four-star recruit who reclassified from the 2027 class, ranks 49th in the nation. The versatile forward averaged 15.2 points per game on the Pro16 circuit last summer. According to On3, Cincinnati, Louisville, Houston, Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, Ole Miss, Arizona State, Auburn, Georgia, and Kentucky were also in the race to sign him.

When Cosby signed with Michigan, the former head coach highlighted what he brings to the table.

“Lincoln has great size, athleticism and versatility, and he impacts the game in a lot of ways,” May said. “He can defend multiple positions, rebound, run the floor, and make plays with the ball in his hands. We’re excited to support him through his rehab process and help him come back even stronger.”

Cosby’s biggest reason to join Michigan was its ability to derive great output from its skilled and versatile forwards.

“How they utilize their big, skilled forwards with versatility … I felt like I saw myself playing and producing in that type of system,” Cosby said, via Jeff Borzello.

    Dusty May’s Departure Leaves Michigan Tumbling in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early 2026-27 Top 25

Despite Michigan retaining all its top four players to come back for another season in Ann Arbor, the uncertainty created by Dusty May’s departure has affected the team’s rankings in ESPN’s way-too-early 2026-27 Top 25.

Even after taking into account the expected departures of Yaxel Lendeborg, Aday Mara, and Morez Johnson Jr. to the NBA, the Wolverines were ranked as the No. 2 team by ESPN for the 2026-27 season.

But after the news of May’s departure, the program has stumbled to No. 5, which is still respectful. For now, Florida, Duke, Illinois, and UConn are ranked ahead of Michigan in ESPN’s way-too-early rankings.
