Kansas Jayhawks coach Bill Self recently joked with a reporter who asked him about Darryn Peterson‘s injury. On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Self and his Jayhawks defeated coach Tommy Lloyd’s Arizona Wildcats 82-78 in Big 12 conference play at the former’s home arena, the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Jayhawks had to work hard against one of the top teams in the nation this year without their freshman Peterson, who is reportedly dealing with an illness. During the post-game press conference, coach Self was asked why Peterson was not on the availability report for the game. Self answered, along with joking around with the reporter afterwards.
“ Yeah, yeah, because we thought he’d go, yeah. We thought he’d, we thought he’d go. So, I thought adrenaline would kick in, and he would go, so. And, you know, he was at a shoot around today. I mean, he was out there, you know, but just what you could just tell, he didn’t feel great. But I would, we were all hopeful that he’d kick in and be ready to go, so. You sound like you bet on the game. But, no, there was no point with that at all,” Self said.

The reason Self joked is that the reporter sounded a bit too monotone while posing the question. Nevertheless, it was a swift, hilarious moment shared by Self and the media, with the former now hoping that Peterson returns sooner rather than later, as conference play heats up. Peterson is leading Kansas in scoring this year as a first-year guard.
The Kansas Jayhawks Won Over The Arizona Wildcats Without Darryn Peterson
Even with Darryn Peterson sitting out their intense affair, coach Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks beat the Arizona Wildcats at home by four points, 82-78.
What makes this victory even more impressive, besides playing without Peterson, is the fact that the Wildcats entered the game undefeated with a 23-0 (10-0 Big 12) record. Kansas became the first team this year to defeat Arizona.
