Right after Kansas defeated BYU 90-82, the Jayhawks’ coach, Bill Self, revealed Darryn Peterson‘s injury struggles that led to his premature exit. On Saturday, Jan. 31, Self and the rest of his Jayhawks faced coach Kevin Young’s BYU Cougars on the former’s home court, the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.
Kansas freshman Peterson outmatched his first-year rival, AJ Dybantsa, with his tenacious scoring at all three levels. Unfortunately for his team and the rest of the Jayhawks faithful, Peterson sat out the entirety of the second half. Appearing on the “Field of 68” show with collegiate hoops analyst Jeff Goodman, coach Self later detailed that his conditioning led to untimely cramps.
“ I mean, the guy is, he’s been relentless in the training room or whatnot. But for, whatever reason, his body does this sometimes. Now, I think this time it could be because of conditioning, because you know he turned his ankle Tuesday against Colorado, a week ago Tuesday. So what’s that been 10, 11 days? Yeah, and he practiced on Thursday right now. Now was he out there doing one-on-zero shooting? Yeah. And doing that stuff? Yes,” Self said.
“But as far as getting winded, he practiced on Thursday and on Thursday in practice, I said, ‘Ooh, you’re kind of gassed a little bit, aren’t you?'” he further said.
“Bill Self updated @GoodmanHoops postgame on Darryn Peterson 👀 ‘His quad just started cramping. And once it starts, it’s hard for him to come back. He’s done everything he’s supposed to. I think this time might’ve been because of conditioning,'” @fieldof68 on Instagram captioned.
Even with Peterson out for the entire second period, the Jayhawks managed to get the victory over Dybantsa and the Cougars by eight points, 90-82. Kansas now holds an overall record of 16-5 (6-2 Big 12) while BYU falls to 17-4 (5-3 Big 12). The Jayhawks will look to continue their winning ways against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Monday, Feb. 2, as Peterson hopes to play the entire game.
Bill Self Is Confident In Darryn Peterson’s Ability To Quickly Get Into Rhythm
Despite Darryn Peterson leaving the second half of the matchup between the Kansas Jayhawks and the BYU Cougars, coach Bill Self has no doubts about his ability to perform at a high level even after a setback. This is what Self shared in his interview with Jeff Goodman of the “Field of 68,” highlighting that Peterson played well even if he practiced only one time during the said week.
“So, I wonder if that could be part of it, but he’ll get that back quickly. He may not get it all back by Monday, but it was pretty impressive for a guy to practice one time and be out of rhythm supposedly, and come out and perform like that, right?” Self shared.
