Dallas Mavericks fired Jason Kidd on May 19th. The decision was declared as a mutual decision. However, recently Mavericks president Masai Ujiri came out and claimed that firing Kidd was his decision. Now the search for the new head coach is on and the most recent name to come up is Duke’s Jon Scheyer.
Jon Scheyer overtook from Duke legend Coach K in 2022. In a short span of just 4 years, Scheyer has certainly shown signs of becoming a top class coach. He led Duke to a Final Four in 2025, three ACC tournament championships (2023, 2025, 2026) and two ACC regular season championship in the last two seasons. He also won NABC and ACC coach of the year this year.
One could argue the lack of experience for coach Scheyer is a major factor against Jon Scheyer’s consideration for a big NBA job. However, he does have another factor working in his favor and that is his former player Cooper Flagg.
According to NBA analyst Brett Siegel, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to pursue Duke head coach Jon Scheyer for the head coach position.
Cooper Flagg has averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 70 games of his NBA career. He has won the rookie of the year for 2025-26 after being the number one pick. In his standout freshman season in college, Flagg was arguably the best player in the country. He won AP player of the year. Best of Flagg is yet to come in the NBA and Scheyer might just be the man to do it.
Fans react as Dallas Mavericks rumored to reach out to Jon Scheyer
Fans were fully in support of this option for the Mavs. The general consensus seemed to be against the idea of brining in Scheyer.
“Scheyer isn’t leaving Duke. This is a fake report. The mavs aren’t going to take a chance on a coach who has only been coaching in college for 4 yrs. He wouldn’t even leave Duke if OKC offered him or something,” one fan claimed.
“Why would he leave a lifetime job competing for nattys every year for a mid NBA team,” another fan stated.
“Had a feeling this was coming. You have to do this with all the Duke ties on the roster and he coached Flagg. Scheyer probably says no but you do it,” one fan commented.
“This guy has CRAZY PR because he’s been nothing but a choker and got handed a Bugatti as his first job,” another accused.
“The Mavericks really traded Luka, nuked the franchise, alienated the fanbase, and now want a college coach to clean up the crime scene. At this point Dallas is being run like a billionaire’s fantasy basketball team after 14 tequila shots,” another said.
“Brett Siegel is not a reliable Mavs source for anyone reading this bullsh*t report,” one fan doubted the source.
