Jon Scheyer’s Duke Blue Devils not only halted the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s seven-game home winning streak but also set a conference record in the process. On Tuesday, the No. 1 Blue Devils secured a 100-56 victory, ending the winning run of Notre Dame, and improved to 26-2 on the season, solidifying their status as the top team in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The 44-point win on Tuesday also made Scheyer the first head coach in ACC history with multiple 40-point road wins against ACC opposition.
Duke freshman Cameron Boozer led the game from the front with 24 points, shooting 5-8 from the floor, including 2 of 2 from beyond the arc. He also recorded 13 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Five other players from Duke scored in double digits, including Caleb Foster, Isaiah Evans, Cayden Boozer and Darren Harris. It was Duke’s fifth straight win and ninth on the road.
Jon Scheyer Happy With Duke Setting the Tone Early
Right from the start of the game, Duke had their foot on Notre Dame’s neck. In his post game comments, Jon Scheyer was impressed with how the team started clicking on the onset, highlighting a play involving Cameron Boozer and Patrick Ngongba II, who had 13 points in the win.
“I thought we establish Pat early,” Scheyer told reporters. “He did a good job getting us going. He had a bucket, he also had a nice pass to Cam where he had that layup as well. But that’s the strength of our team. If we can establish that early, it’s what we want. I thought the 3-point shooting followed the ability to establish the paint. Shot 50% in the first half, we shot not great in the second half, but I thought we got great looks.”
Scheyer also put thoughts on the nature of a blowout win since he knows Notre Dame were troubled with several injuries coming into this game.
“Obviously, Notre Dame, that’s not their team,” the Blue Devils coach added. “They’ve had really tough injuries but I was really proud of our approach, our defense. I thought we had some really good sequences of sharing and making the right play. This is a great thing for us. We get another conference win, their precious, and keep on growing.”
Duke has a chance to secure the conference’s regular season title by winning the game against Virginia next on Saturday, Feb. 28 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
