Jerome Tang’s Kansas State Wildcats men’s basketball team suffered another blowout loss yesterday. The Wildcats lost 62-91 at home against the Cincinnati Bearcats as they got outplayed in every aspect of the game.
The Wildcats posted 31 points in the first half. In comparison, the Bearcats dropped 53. Even though Cincinnati slowed down significantly in the second half, Kansas State still couldn’t turn the game around.
To say that Tang was frustrated after the game would be an understatement. At the post-game press conference, the head coach went off on his players, calling them out for what has been a disastrous run.
“This was embarrassing,” he said. “These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform, and there will be very few of them in it next year. I’m embarrassed for the university, I’m embarrassed for our fans, and our student section. It’s just ridiculous.”
This was the fifth consecutive loss for the Wildcats, 14th for the season. They now have the second-worst record in the Big 12, only above Utah, and are ranked 15th. They shot just 40% from the field, 24% from the three-point line, and 67% from the charity stripe.
In his own words, Tang was very “pissed” and didn’t even do a full press conference after the game. He told the reporters that he would take just two questions and leave.
“We have practice at 6 a.m. tomorrow. I have no answers or no words. Y’all got two questions, so whoever wants to ask two questions, I’ll answer ’em to the best of my ability right now. But right now, I’m pissed,” he added.
Kansas State will play the Houston Cougars next on February 14. They are currently on a five-game winning streak and are ranked second in the Big 12 with a 22-2 overall record.
Jerome Tang Believes the Players Don’t Deserve to Be There
Tang was very disappointed in his team, and it was evident from the way he spoke about them. The 2023 Naismith College Coach of the Year believes that the players don’t take pride in the uniform they put on to represent their program.
He stated that there should be an element of pride in them, something that motivates them to not only play well, but also try to win games.
“These dudes have to have some pride, man,” he added. “It means something to wear a K-State uniform. It means something to put on this purple, man. Our university’s all about that, and it’s why I love this place, man. They don’t love this place, so they don’t deserve to be here.”
As he stated at the beginning of the press conference, Tang walked out after the second question, which was about booing. He said that he understands why his team is getting booed, even at home.
