Rodney Terry is just coming from a season off coaching, having left the Texas Longhorns in disgrace after the end of the 2025 March Madness, after a defeat at the hands of Xavier in the First Four round of the NCAA Tournament. This ended a three-year stint in charge of the Austin program.
Following the defeat, the then-Texas head coach said the following about his future:
“I’ve been at Texas 13 years, and there’s not a year I haven’t made the NCAA Tournament or been part of the NCAA Tournament,” Terry said after the First Four loss, when asked about his job security. “I have a lot of pride in terms of being a Longhorn. I love being at Texas. I don’t think anyone has been a part of Texas basketball that’s been more successful than myself. I’ve been a part of the top-five seasons in this program’s history.”
His wish to stay in Texas didn’t turn out as he hoped, as in late March, the University of Texas parted ways with him. On March 21, he posted the following message to social media:
“Thank you Longhorn Nation for your consistent support,” Terry said on social media. “And a special thanks to all of our players, coaches and staff for your commitment and continuing to stay the course all season. Love you guys. #HookEm”
He has now been hired by the Vanderbilt Commodores to become the school’s new assistant coach, according to reports by On3’s Joe Tipton. He will return to coaching after a year off the courts, in which he mainly worked as an ESPN analyst and a broadcaster on the SEC Network.
How Did Rodney Terry Do As The Texas Longhorns Head Coach?
Rodney Terry’s stint in charge of Texas has largely been considered a success, as he was able to take the team to the NCAA Tournament each of his three seasons in charge. The problem was the diminishing returns he faced, with his best result being reaching the Elite Eight round in 2023. In 2024, they made it to the Second Round, and in 2025, they were out at the First Four stage. In 2023, they were also the Big 12 Tournament champions.
His overall record was 62–37, which looks positive on paper, but when looked at in detail, it was also a case of diminishing returns. His final record was 19-16 in 2024-25, which is poor when compared to the 22-8 of his first season.
