Is Bill Murray a UConn Fan? Actor’s College Basketball Allegiance Explained

Yes, famous Hollywood actor Bill Murray is a fan of UConn, and he has a special reason for that. His son, Luke Murray, has been an assistant coach for the UConn Huskies men’s basketball.

To cheer and support his son, Murray has been a regular courtside presence since 2021. Does that mean he is a die-hard UConn fan?

Not necessarily, but when UConn won back-to-back titles a couple of seasons ago, Bill Murray was all over the Storrs. When asked about Murray’s love for the basketball program, head coach Dan Hurley said:

“Bill, you know, he keeps a low profile with us. I mean, he’s a fly on the wall during video sessions. Bill Murray has enjoyed this ride as much as my dad because he loves basketball. I think he watched more last run, but literally his times were like, we’re grinding, you know, grinding like a Purdue game or what have you in a 36-hour stretch, and maybe he’s in the back and he’s watched two or three of them, three or four of them.

“I couldn’t believe it when we were in Vegas last year getting ready for Gonzaga, and he’s just watching Drew Timmy. He’s studying Drew Timmy. He loves, loves basketball, and obviously he loves Luke.”

What Does Bill Murray’s Son Luke Do With UConn?

Before joining UConn in 2021, Bill Murray’s son, Luke, was a graduate assistant from 2007 to 2021, with Quinnipiac, Post, Arizona, Wagner, Towson, Rhode Island, Xavier and Louisville. Murray has been with Hurley since his time at Wagner and Rhode Island. Hurley has hailed Luke previously for helping the team prepare on the offensive side:

“There’s just not a lot of holes in the way that we play. We’ve got a great offense, we rebound the ball, we’re an elite defensive team, Luke Murray and Kimani Young prepare us. We’re deep with NBA players that are about winning.”

Luke is one of the top recruiters of the program. His role is to scout high school talent during the offseason and convince them to commit to UConn. He is in line for consideration to become the new head coach somewhere.
