Jeff Teague Highlights “New Youth Kinda Coaching” That Makes Jon Scheyer Appeal to Duke Players

Former NBA player Jeff Teague seems really impressed with Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer, highlighting what makes him an appealing choice for elite high school players looking to enter college.

Speaking on the Club 520 podcast, Teague mentioned that Scheyer is doing an incredible job, recruiting some of the best players in the country. The former Atlanta Hawks star also gave Duke top marks, calling it a “historic program.”

“For him to take over that program, a historic program, probably the most historic program in the last 20 or 30 years, Duke’s been to multiple Final Fours, won championships,” Teague said.

Teague then talked about Scheyer’s modern coaching style, which is appealing to today’s players. Unlike coaches who rely solely on experience, he can still step on the court and demonstrate the skills and nuances of the game through hands-on instruction.

“I think he just has a really good rapport with the guys,” Teague added. “Speaking to guys that play at Duke, they enjoy being around him. He’s easy to work with. But then he also has that new youth kind of coaching. Like, I can relate to you. I can get on the court and play with you. I can teach you things, and then you can see the things that I’ve learned because I can actually still show you when I get on the court.”

“And I think that matters for kids these days. If they can see you did it before, they’ll believe it. If you can just talk about it, I think those days are kind of out the window. I think they want to see you on the floor and be able to prove some of the stuff that you’re talking about.”

Jon Scheyer Leads Duke to Another Great NBA Draft

The appeal of college basketball coaches grows even more when their players are selected in the NBA draft. For Jon Scheyer, he had a great representation from Duke in the draft last month.

Three Duke players were selected in the 2026 NBA draft. Cameron Boozer was picked third overall by the Memphis Grizzlies. Isaiah Evans was selected in the second round by the Brooklyn Nets. Finally, Maliq Brown was picked up by the Spurs as the 44th overall pick.

Since taking over Duke as head coach in 2022, Scheyer has produced 12 draft picks. It is three more than any other college basketball program. UConn and Kentucky have nine each. Boozer’s first-round selection was the 13th consecutive time for Duke to see their freshman get picked in the draft.

This shows how Duke remains an elite destination for programs despite the exit of legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Scheyer is filling the vacancy really well.
