Hubert Davis has had a longstanding relationship with the North Carolina Tar Heels. He represented UNC during his college career from 1988 to 1992. Davis was a first-round pick in the 1992 NBA Draft and had a 12-year career in the league.
Nearly a decade after retirement, he came back to his alma mater as an assistant and served in that position until 2021. Davis was then made the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels.
He has had a successful run with the Tar Heels in terms of winning percentage, but hasn’t been able to win trophies like the program expected. Davis has been able to dedicate his life to basketball because he has a great support system.
He has been married to Leslie Davis for over two decades. They first met when they were in high school, then crossed paths during their time at the University of North Carolina. They didn’t start dating until Leslie’s graduation, and they’ve been together ever since.
“For whatever reason, she ended up [attending] North Carolina,” Davis told Chapel Hill Magazine. “I didn’t even know she was even considering it. She just showed up on campus, and I was like, ‘What are you doing here?’ She said, ‘I got into North Carolina.’ I said, ‘What in the world? You didn’t tell me?’”
After several years of dating, they tied the knot in 1999. Davis and Leslie have three children, Elijah Webb, Bobbie Grace, and Micah.
Davis’ team faced the VCU Rams in the NCAA Tournament yesterday and suffered a shocking 78-82 defeat. Since the loss, fans have started demanding that the program fire him.
Hubert Davis on Raising His Kids
Davis is a devoted family man, and despite his professional commitments, his life revolves around his family. After losing his mother at a very young age, Davis had a vision for his future and where he wanted to be with his family.
Born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Chapel Hill became his comfort place through his years of development, and Davis knew that’s where he wanted to raise his children.
“I needed a place that was going to open its arms up to me and encourage and support me,” he said. “That’s what I found here, not just from the coaches, not just from the secretaries or from the guys on the team, but this university and this community.”
Davis said the community embraced him and gave him the support that he needed. During his college years, Davis formed a special bond with the place.
