The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball has become the biggest upset story of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. Despite having a massive lead, the Tar Heels allowed the VCU Rams to come back and register an 82-78 victory in overtime.
Naturally, head coach Hubert Davis was asked a lot of questions in the post-game conference, as college basketball is still digesting this upset on Thursday.
Davis calmly addressed the questions. He was asked if his team looked tired in the second half and why he used just a six-man rotation in the second half.
“Because that was my decision,” the head coach said.
Davis was also asked about the team’s free-throw troubles. Moreover, Davis had an interesting anwer to what went wrong:
“What do you mean?..Just because you miss a shot doesn’t mean something is wrong. We had shots at the basket, executed plays and missed eight free throws. Sometimes the ball doesn’t go in.”
For most part of the interview, Davis appeared clueless as he himself don’t appear to have an idea on how it happened.
Hubert Davis’ Buyout Contract Comes to Focus After Surprising First Round Loss
The March Madness has reached its peak with UNC’s elimination. No one expected this, and the fans in Chapel Hill are livid with the outcome on Thursday. Naturally, in college sports, the head coach is the first person to be blamed for such losses, as players come and go every year. Fans want Davis’ resignation, leading to questions being raised about the head coach’s future with the program.
In the wake of this loss, Davis’ buyout contract has come into the spotlight.
Davis joined North Carolina in 2021-22, replacing Roy Williams, who led the program to the national championship game. The results following Davis’ hiring haven’t been encouraging. They declined the NIT Invitation in 2023 and made the Sweet 16 in 2024.
According to USA TODAY Network, if North Carolina fires Davis before April 1, they’ll owe him $5.312 million. Davis is signed to a six-year deal that runs through June 30, 2030. His base salary remaining is around $5 million. For the 2026 season, Davis will be paid $3.850 million. That compensation is set to increase by $100K annually for the next four years if the association sees the end of the deal.
