The North Carolina Tar Heels just received a huge blow to their ACC and NCAA Tournament aspirations. The Tar Heels’ star forward, Caleb Wilson, suffered a season-ending injury to his right hand in a non-contact drill during practice this Thursday.
This is a significant setback for Wilson, who fractured his left hand on February 10 and now has suffered a season-ending right thumb injury that will require surgery. ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the news on X, writing:
“North Carolina’s Caleb Wilson broke his right thumb in a non-contact drill in practice Thursday and has undergone season-ending surgery, sources tell ESPN. Wilson is expected to be cleared during the NBA predraft process, where he’ll compete to be the No. 1 pick in June.”
Just last week, coach Hurbert Davis said the following about Wilson’s recovery:
“He is progressing. He’s been doing individual workouts. Since we played on Tuesday, we didn’t have practice yesterday and we’ll practice today. He’ll do more today. But other than that I don’t have any other information.”
Hurbert Davis on the North Carolina Tar Heels’ Issues With Injuries
This Saturday, the North Carolina Tar Heels have probably the toughest game of their regular season, as they face their neighbors in their “Research Triangle,” the No. 1 Duke Blue Devils, in their regular season finale.
Speaking at the pregame press conference, coach Hurbert Davis was asked about North Carolina’s injury issues this season, and he had this to say:
“You’re talking about the injuries and having to adjust; those are the things you guys (media) see, there’s a lot of other things that go into getting prepared for a game. And so, there’s always ongoing adjustments, things that you have to change, look at, tweak, pivot, alter, throughout the year to put them in the best position to be successful.
“But like I’ve said before, I’m so proud of this group or how they’ve been able to do it because when you look at it in its entirety, it’s been a lot,” he added.
The Tar Heels have had issues with their top three players this season, with Seth Trimble missing nine games, Henri Veesaar missing two, and Wilson missing the last six contests and now the entirety of the postseason.
