The North Carolina Tar Heels have a new recruit, and he is a son of a Tar Heels icon as Kenny “The Jet” Smith’s son, Malloy Smith, has chosen UNC to be his college of choice. He is the latest NBA son to choose his father’s alma mater, and famous examples include Cayden and Cameron Boozer choosing Duke, where Carlos Boozer played, and Kiyan Anthony choosing Syracuse, which Carmelo Anthony won a national title with.
However, there were some mixed reactions to the guard even being offered by UNC, as fans accused Hubert Davis’ program of nepotism, given that Kenny Smith is an all-time great for North Carolina.
“averaged 8pts this year – feel bad for the kids who can really play and deserve the spot over a kid who has a famous last name,” said one fan.
“Was this announced across all UNC basketball and UNC basketball related social media because he’s good and going to contribute or just bc he’s Kenny smiths son?,” another person asked.
“Taking scholarships away from kids that actually need it,” another person wrote.
“He riding the bench for 4 years like his brother?,” asked another commenter.
“Don’t be sad about Wilson UNC fans, you just got a combo bench warmer and waterboy for next year 🔥🔥” said one critic.
“Kenny loved his high school enough to name his son after it. That is wild,” one person pointed out.
Malloy Smith Reveals Why He Chose UNC
After he chose to go to Chapel Hill, Malloy Smith sat down with On3/ Rivals and revealed why he chose to become a Tar Heel like his father.
“I chose North Carolina because of how it felt like home, the coaches trust and belief in me and their future plans for me align with mine and how I feel they can get the best out of me,” he said. “Just the traditions and the history of North Carolina. How special the fan base is and it just speaks to the fact that every single coach has played at North Carolina and most of the staff as well.”
Malloy Smith currently plays for Mater Dei High School and is an unstarred prospect who has been described to have a lot of ceiling, which means Hubert Davis could develop him even further.
