Kelvin Sampson’s Houston Cougars registered a dominant 29-point win against the UCF Knights tonight. It was the Cougars’ third consecutive win and 20th overall for the season. They are currently second in the Big 12, only behind the undefeated Arizona Wildcats.
Although the Cougars are doing well, Sampson isn’t happy. During the post-game press conference, Sampson detailed the problem his program is facing right now. Sampson stated that they’ve struggled with it for a long time.
The Cougars don’t have enough money. As per Sampson, the lack of a good budget is keeping them from building a strong roster, one that would hopefully compete for the title and be recognized as one of the best in the country.
For now, Houston is trying to stay afloat with whatever they have. Sampson said that the issue of low budget is also hindering their ability to recruit players. Without that, they’ll never be able to realize their full potential.
“We participate in the NIL just like everybody else. We know what our kids’ market value is. Trust me, they’re not starving here. They’re getting exactly what the market is for them. But, you know, we have a very poor athletic department,” he said.
While the players are getting what they deserve, the budget issue is limiting the program’s ability to break its current ceiling and aim higher.
“We’re still poor. We probably have the lowest budget of anybody in Power 4. The way our recruiting is going, we’re going to have to stop it at some point because we don’t have enough money to keep bringing in good players, he added.
Trying to build a program with the harsh reality staring in their face is a challenging task that Sampson is dealing with right now.
Kelvin Sampson Gave a Reality Check
Sampson said that the programs with the best recruiting classes have one thing in common: they all have enough money to build their rosters. Houston is unfortunately not a part of that group.
He is also worried about the future of the program. Right now, they have great players on the team. As a result, they’re winning games and are staying near the top of the list. However, the current class will soon part ways.
“A lot of these kids we have will come back. But who knows what else we’ll sign because how much money do we have? It’s not about who we want to sign, it’s who can we afford to sign,” he said.
The coach also provided a new abbreviation for NIL, Now It’s Legal.
