The Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State played another classic game on Friday. It was a high-intensity matchup between the two arch-rivals. Tom Izzo and Dusty May’s comments before the game made the encounter even more fiery.
Izzo’s Michigan State got the better of the Michigan Wolverines twice in 2025, and this year, May was looking for revenge. Izzo was already talked about a lot when he took a stand against G League players returning to play college basketball. So when he was asked about their next match and his feelings towards that opponent, his response sparked fire in both fan bases.
Izzo said he “hates” Michigan and that he has always hated them and always has been honest about it. But he also said that he respected them a lot. So when the Wolverines came to the Breslin Center, the welcome that Dusty May received was nothing short of hostile. The student section of the Spartans booed and chanted “f*ck you Dusty.” The Wolverines head coach took that with aplomb and smiled through it. He replied with an 83-71 win over the Spartans. After the win, he slammed Michigan State’s tactics.
A reporter asked May about the play where Michigan State’s Jeremy Fears Jr. “appeared” to trip Yaxel Lendeborg. The head coach was quick to interrupt and ask sarcastically, “appeared?” He apologized but did not mince words while talking about such plays.
“I think there are several plays that are very dangerous and I am incredibly proud of our guys from the responses they had to some of those situations, incredibly proud for their self-control, their restraint, and their impulse control. I’ll leave at that. But they are not isolated incidents,” May said. “Film’s there 40 minutes of it. It’s not hard to find.”
Fans React to Dusty May’s Accusation of Tom Izzo’s Michigan State
Some fans online were not impressed by May’s complaints. However, some showed him support.
“Dusty May is the perfect hire for Michigan, acts just like em,” one fan joked.
“Ah yes cuz Michigan is very known for abiding by rules and playing fair,” another accused.
“‘crybaby’ he literally won tho. He would only bring this up if it was a legitimate concern,” one fan supported May.
“Fears couldn’t stop us, what happens you don’t know how to lose,” one Wolverines fan said.
“Holy cope comments by lil bro fans,” one fan commented.
“Wins the game and still finds a way to be a diva,” another trolled.
