Houston Cougars guard Kingston Flemings is embracing the blame, personally, after his squad’s most recent loss that cost them a potential major championship. On Saturday, March 14, Flemings and the rest of coach Kelvin Sampson‘s 2025-26 Houston team were pitted against coach Tommy Lloyd’s Arizona Wildcats on neutral grounds, the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, for the 2026 Big 12 conference tournament title.
In a post-game interview in his own team’s locker room with college hoops reporter Chris Baldwin, that’s posted to X/Twitter, Flemings was asked about how it feels to be backed up by his frontcourt teammates. This is because Flemings felt that he, along with fellow perimeter player Chris Cenac Jr., did not play up to their usual standard as they were helped out by the rest of their starters.
“ Yeah, I mean, it is good, for sure. But I think, you know, just being consistent. I mean Jojo’s consistent every single game. But I think me and Chris, this game kind of, we just didn’t show up, honestly. You know, three of the five starters did, but me and Chris really didn’t. So I think, I mean, to win in the Big 12 and the tournament, you got to be consistent. You can’t have a good game one game, next game not show up,” Flemings said. (0:03)
“That’s why you lose. That’s how you get upset. So I think, I mean, me and Chris know what we did wrong. We know what we did,” he continued.
Unfortunately for Flemings and the rest of the Houston-based program, they ended up losing to the Wildcats by just five points, 79-74, to miss out on the conference championship. For now, the Cougars’ priorities remain at winning the 2026 national title, especially since they lost in the 2025 NCAA title game. Currently, Houston has churned out an overall record of 28-6 (14-4 Big 12).
Despite Just Being In His First Year, Kingston Flemings Is Aware Of What’s At Stake In The NCAA Tournament
Later on his interview with Chris Baldwin in his team’s locker room, Kingston Flemings was asked if his feelings and mindset had changed in any way now that the focus had shifted towards the 2026 NCAA tournament and past this year’s Big 12 conference tourney. Flemings then expounded on how much he hates losing and is completely aware of what can be lost if his team falters in the national postseason.
“ I mean, for sure. I mean, I hate losing any game, honestly. Every single game kind of feels like this. But I mean, now you know, you lose one time, last time playing with your boys. So I think just locking in, you know, just blowing it out, you know, playing for each other,” Flemings shared. (1:10)
