There have been many talented freshmen in college basketball this season. This year’s freshman class is stacked, and John Calipari’s Arkansas star Darius Acuff Jr is one of the best players this season. Many have talked about AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer and have cited one of those three to end up as the number 1 draft pick, with AJ and Darryn being the more possible candidates. Darius Acuff has been under the radar and underrated. Nonetheless, his impact has been massive.
Darius Acuff Jr is averaging 22.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 6.4 assists in 31 games this season. He won the SEC rookie of the year as well as the SEC player of the year. John Calipari has produced another great guard under his leadership. Arkansas has reached the SEC tournament final as they are firing on all cylinders right now.
Darius Acuff Jr recently broke a 56-year-old SEC record. He became only the second player in SEC history to lead conference points and assists in the same season. The only other player who had achieved this feat was LSU legend Pete Maravich in the 1969-70 season. Other than this, the Arkansas star also entered the NCAA history books.
Darius Acuff becomes the 28th player in D1 men’s basketball history to reach 700+ points, 200+ assists, and 100+ rebounds in a season. The last player to achieve this was Ja Morant in 2018-19.
Fans React as Darius Acuff Jr. Enters NCAA History
Fans were in awe of the Arkansas freshman.
“Historic company. Darius Acuff joining a list that includes Ja Morant is no small feat. 700+ PTS, 200+ AST, 100+ REB in a season… that’s elite all-around production,” one fan said.
“How many of those 28 were freshmen?” One fan wondered.
“Oklahoma’s Trae Young, Howard’s RJ Cole, Georgia Tech’s Kenny Anderson and now Acuff,” another answered.
“He plays with that Morant energy. Future top-5 pick written all over him,” one fan claimed.
“Damn Ja played 2 seasons that shit gotta be hard to do,” another commented.
“Look. The kid is special. There’s not much more to say,” another praised.
