Siena Saints star guard Gavin Doty is set to enter the transfer portal when it opens next month. He had a good sophomore run with the Saints, averaging 18 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.
He nearly caused one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. After a 13-7 run in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Saints made it to March Madness, where they faced the Duke Blue Devils in the first round.
Doty played 40 minutes and led the team with 21 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Two other Siena starters scored in double digits, but they couldn’t avoid a 65-71 loss against Cameron Boozer and Co.
Following the loss, the program parted ways with head coach Gerry McNamara, and two days later, Doty announced that he will enter the transfer portal next month. Doty will likely garner interest from several teams following his breakout season.
Five Teams That Should Target Gavin Doty
Syracuse
It’s a no-brainer for Doty and is highly likely to be his next destination. His former Saints head coach had a 15-year run with the Syracuse Orange in different roles. He has now joined the program as head coach.
Doty has expressed his wish to continue playing for McNamara. “I plan on playing for G-Mac through my whole career,” he said. Doty is from the Syracuse area, so everything seems to be falling in place for him.
It’ll be shocking if he doesn’t end up with Syracuse when the transfer portal opens.
St. John’s
St John’s Red Storm’s head coach, Rick Pitino, is known for his aggressive approach during the transfer portal window. Doty, being a great developing prospect who just had a breakout year, makes him a good target for Pitino.
Kansas State
The Kansas State Wildcats had a hard time winning games this season. They finished with the second-worst record in the Big 12 Conference. They went 3-15 in the conference and 12-20 overall. While the team’s defense did a good job in most games, their offense crumbled in high stakes matchup.
Doty, as a high-scoring guard who can shoot from all levels, is a good fit for the Wildcats.
Providence
The Providence Friars might be monitoring Doty’s situation because they’re coming off a disappointing run this season. Their offense crumbled in the Big East Tournament as just three players scored in double digits. Doty possesses the skills that the Friars could benefit from.
Villanova
The Villanova Wildcats could be a good fit for Doty as they have a strong legacy when it comes to developing guards, and Doty fits the “Villanova guard” archetype. The Wildcats had a first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament.
Although there are several good options available for Doty, he is willing to follow his former head coach, and going to Syracuse makes sense for him in more ways than one.
