With sports becoming increasingly commoditized, all the chatter is around player contracts, the amounts team spend and how it all just tends to get a bit excessive as compared to a few decades ago. So perhaps it becomes even more impressive that in this day and age, someone like Jalen Brunson exists. And Green Bay head coach Doug Gottlieb made sure we remember.
Gottlieb took to social media platform X to remind the world that Jalen Brunson made a truly unselfish decision back in 2024 during contract negotiations with the New York Knicks that have ripple effects even today as the Knicks take home their third NBA Championship and first since 1973.
Gottlieb quoted a 2024 tweet from former basketball insider Adrian Wojnarowski who revealed that Brunson received “$113M less guaranteed than he’s eligible to receive in one year” to boost roster flexibility and allow the team to be kept together as they attempted to win the NBA Title.
“Everyone says they want to win, how many would actually sacrifice $$ to do so,” Gottlieb wrote in relation to Brunson’s unselfish gesture.
The result was that top players stuck with the Knicks including Brunson himself, and played a crucial role in the team winning the NBA Championship, beating the San Antonio Spurs 4-1 in the finals.
What’s Doug Gottlieb Doing Now?
Doug Gottlieb is currently leading the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay in the Horizon League at the collegiate level.
Following his playing career, Gottlieb took to broadcast with his analysis on college basketball on platforms such as ESPN becoming prominent. Since 2024, however, he has returned to the world of college basketball to coach Green Bay, but continues to put out his opinions regularly on social media.
