Fred Hoiberg joined the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2019. A former NBA star, Hoiberg was a 2nd round, 52nd overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers. He had a decade-long career playing for the Pacers, Bulls, and Timberwolves.
Five years after his retirement, Hoiberg joined the Iowa State Cyclones as their head coach. He won the Big 12 tournament twice in Iowa before becoming the head coach for the Chicago Bulls. His coaching tenure in the NBA only lasted until 2018.
The following year, he joined the Cornhuskers and has had a decent run so far. This year, the Cornhuskers are second in the Big Ten conference with a 15-5 record. They are tied with Michigan State and Illinois for the spot.
Statistically, this is the best season by the Cornhuskers under Hoiberg. With a 26-5 overall record, they’ve made a major turnaround from their last season’s 21-14 overall and 7-13 conference record.
Hoiberg is being rewarded for the same. The Cornhuskers recently offered him a contract extension. Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen announced that both parties have agreed to the contract extension that will run through the 2031-32 season.
Although the exact value of his salary isn’t publicly revealed, Hoiberg’s salary at Nebraska is approximately $4.35 million to $4.75 million per year. In April 2025, his buyout amount was valued at $18.5 million.
“Fred Hoiberg is a tremendous representative of the University of Nebraska, the Lincoln community, and our state. We are extremely proud that he will continue to lead the Nebraska men’s basketball program well into the future,” Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen said.
The program believes that Hoiberg is taking the Cornhuskers in the right direction and has made a great effort in building the program step by step. The program trusts his vision, and the contract extension cements that belief.
Fred Hoiberg Thanked Troy Dannen and Jeffrey Gold
Hoiberg is appreciative of the trust the program is putting in his vision. There’s no denying that his efforts have brought positive results for the Cornhuskers, especially in the current season.
The Nebraska head coach thanked Troy Dannen and Jeffrey Gold for trusting his vision and supporting him and his staff.
“We have a long family history with the University of Nebraska, and the support we have received over the last seven years is truly remarkable. We are blessed with world-class facilities, but the people are what make Nebraska special,” Hoiberg said.
Hoiberg said that his long-term vision with the program is to build something that is not only embraced by the fans but also something they can be proud of.
