The Duke Blue Devils have qualified for the ACC quarterfinals. Jon Scheyer’s team has dominated the Atlantic Coast throughout the season. They finished the regular season with 29 wins and two losses overall.
The Blue Devils went 17-1 in the conference, and in the final stretch, they went on an eight-game winning streak. Duke also remained unbeaten at home throughout the season after 15 games.
A dominant run like that is bound to take a toll on the team at some point. The Blue Devils are struggling with multiple injuries on their roster. Sophomore center Patrick Ngongba recently made the team’s injury report.
He missed the game against the North Carolina Tar Heels. In his absence, the Blue Devils managed to secure a 76-61 win. Junior guard Caleb Foster left the Tar Heels game in the first half with a right foot injury.
He was later seen with a walking boot on his injured foot. The Blue Devils’ opponent for the ACC quarterfinal hasn’t been finalized yet. But they have bigger things to worry about now, as their playing style might be affected due to a string of injuries.
What’s commendable is that the Blue Devils have still managed to remain dominant despite the injuries. However, with the season now getting more intense, can they keep the momentum going while chasing titles?
Duke Blue Devils Head Coach Jon Scheyer’s Contract Extension
Scheyer joined his alma mater in 2014 as an assistant. After nearly a decade, he was named the head coach of the program. Since then, Scheyer has maintained a winning record with the Blue Devils.
He has a 117-24 overall record as a head coach. Scheyer has secured the number one seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the last two seasons. Because of his continued dominance, the program has invested in him for the long run.
In October last year, he signed an extension deal with the Blue Devils through the 2030-31 season. Scheyer took over the program after the legendary Mike Krzyzewski retired. The program saw potential in him as Coach K’s successor.
“Jon’s remarkable impact over his first three seasons has positioned Duke Basketball for sustained excellence, and we are proud to ensure his leadership well into the future,” Duke vice president Nina King said.
“He has delivered championships and national prominence, and he continues to lead a program built on character, connection, and a relentless pursuit of greatness.”
Although the exact value of his contract isn’t revealed, reports suggest that Scheyer makes around $7 to $8 million from his Blue Devils contract.
