It’s been more than a week now since UNC fired longtime head coach Hubert Davis and hired Michael Malone.
The Tar Heels are looking to rebuild their program under Malone, who won 510 games in 12 seasons as a head coach in the NBA. The program is now gearing up to finalize a deal with former Providence head coach Kim English as their new assistant coach.
English spent three years at Providence, where he ended his tenure with an overall record of 48-52 and a 23-37 mark in the Big East, before being fired on March 13.
Fans had mixed feelings about the news.
“This is a very solid move by UNC management and Malone sir. Kim English has been a head coach at good levels so he knows how to handle pressure and recruiting. This coaching staff is looking very dangerous now for next season,” one fan reacted.
“Michael Malone is turning UNC into a G-League team. First an NBA staff now Kim English who couldn’t even win in the Big East. The Carolina Family is dead. Hubert Davis and Roy Williams would never have allowed this,” another fan wrote.
“If Kim English really takes an assistant job under Michael Malone it’s not a strong hire it’s a downgrade. He went from leading George Mason Patriots men’s basketball and Providence Friars men’s basketball to holding a clipboard
That’s not momentum that’s a reset,” another fan pointed out.
“He should be head coach not Malone,” another fan shared their thoughts.
“Michael Malone bringing in Kim English with real college head coaching experience is exactly the kind of hire that shows UNC is serious about bridging the NBA-to-college transition,” another fan said.
”This is a huge get for the coaching staff. Experienced HC who can recruit & has a ton of relationships in college. A+ hire,” another fan added.
Michael Malone Expresses Excitement About the Start of His UNC Tenure
Michael Malone first coached in college as an assistant at Manhattan, Providence, and Oakland from 1994 to 2001, and is now returning as the UNC head coach, one of the most prestigious jobs in the country.
Talking about how excited he is to join the Tar Heels, Malone said in his statement that he is honored to be in the position and is humbled by the fact that he is following so many legends in Chapel Hill.
“I know from the many Tar Heels in the NBA how special the Carolina Basketball Family is, and I will do everything I can to continue UNC’s championship legacy while preparing our players for professional careers and life after basketball,” Malone said.
Before the UNC gig, Malone worked as an ESPN analyst for 10+ months.
