Arkansas Razorbacks junior DJ Wagner is reportedly planning to enter the transfer portal, joining fellow sophomore wing Karter Knox. Wagner is coming off a career-low season in which he averaged 7.4 points and 2.4 assists per game this season.
Wagner is set to leave head coach John Calipari after following him from Kentucky to Arkansas. The former 5-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American has only one year of eligibility remaining.
Let’s take a look at five programs that should take a chance on Wagner.
Top 5 Landing Spots for DJ Wagner
-
Kentucky
It will be homecoming for Wagner if he decides to move back to Kentucky, where everything started. The Wildcats are currently led by head coach Mark Pope, who is gradually developing the program.
After a down year, Wagner would like to reset his career trajectory and Kentucky has a featured role for him to do so.
2. Villanova
DJ Wagner is from New Jersey, so Villanova becomes a natural fit for him, considering he was born and brought up there. The Wildcats are known for guard development and discipline. The program could offer him major minutes and a leadership role.
3. Louisville
Louisville is rebuilding and is expected to be aggressive in the transfer portal. They need experienced guards, and Wagner could be a starter for them.
Wagner would like to end his college career on a high note, and for that, he needs good volume. He may not get that luxury at top programs, but with the Cardinals, he can certainly expect a featured role.
4. USC
Assuming Wagner will turn professional after completing college, he will need exposure. He can’t aim any bigger than USC, a program NBA scouts closely follow. Moreover, it helps that their offensive system relies heavily on strong guards.
Therefore, this association will not only give him minutes but also the exposure he needs to capture the attention of professional scouts.
5. St. John’s
If Wagner is looking to join a program with strong NIL backing and a big city spotlight, then Rick Pitino’s St. John’s stands out. After their Sweet 16 exit against Duke, the program needs proven guards with pedigree rather than high-end freshmen with significant downside in the early years.
With the Red Storm, Wagner could maximize his guard role and get the necessary spotlight on himself.
