Former North Carolina head coach, Hubert Davis, has been fired from the program on March 24, 2026.
Davis was with the program for 5 seasons and ended his run with an overall record of 125-54.
The drastic decision to fire Davis comes after the Tar Heels faced a disappointing loss against VCU in the first round matchup of the NCAA tournament.
The program is going to honor the terms of Davis’ deal and give him nearly $5.3 million of guaranteed money.
After the crushing news of his dad’s firing, Hubert’s son, Elijah, posted a picture on Instagram where he scratched out the UNC name from the jersey and wrote a heartfelt message:
“right where we need to be. it’s His plan and His plan only”
Fans poured in their reactions to the post.

“lol free spot, made his dad a multi millionaire, gave them both crazy opportunities and then he does this lol just shows how not ready for the real world this kid is. Clearly,” another fan highlighted.
“Mf got handed a spot on the team solely cause of his dad and has the audacity to be upset about it when he was buns. Go have fun playing for some D3 school brotha,” another fan shared their thoughts.
“One day young man, you’ll appreciate what you had and be totally embarrassed by what you did to that meaningful jersey. #GoHeels,” another fan predicted.
“Who cares. You are putting too much energy into an irrelevant topic. We’re onto finding our next HC. You worried about a social media post,” another fan wrote.
”No one is entitled to a job or a spot on the team, father and son seem to feel entitled to both. Be grateful for the opportunity and move on. UNC is way bigger than the Davis family,” another fan added.
Analyst Reacts to UNC Firing Hubert Davis
Seth Greenberg reacted to the Tar Heels’ decision to let Davis go. He said while the program was right to make a change because of missed opportunities to advance in the tournament in the last four years, they shouldn’t have had Davis ride with them for an extra week.
The analyst highlighted that UNC is a special program that comes with huge expectations but shared that the team should’ve considered the wins over Kansas, Kentucky and Duke.
“Carolina has a right to make a move in terms of their coaching staff. It’s the how they did it to me that bothers me,” Greenberg said.
Some of the names that are reportedly being considered for the job include Dan Hurley, Billy Donovan and Celtics’ Brad Stevens.
