Kansas Jayhawks guard Darryn Peterson did all he could in their most recent postseason game, but to no avail. On Sunday, March 22, Peterson and the rest of Bill Self‘s Kansas Jayhawks lost 65-67 to Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in neutral territory, the Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.
Peterson led his team in scoring with 21 points, along with grabbing four rebounds and swatting four shots in 36 minutes of playing time.
To open the tightly-contested affair, Peterson connected on a three-pointer at the 18:58 mark of the first period after he missed his first jump shot. He went on to make another three-point basket almost immediately, both through catch-and-shoot plays. However, Peterson eventually struggled through the opening minutes of the half, as his next points came at the charity stripe.
The scorer subbed back in the game at the 8:55 mark of the first half after he was subbed out at the 12:19 mark. While he could not get it going on the offensive end any longer, Peterson found other areas to contribute – blocking his opponents’ shots and coralling down rebounds. He finished the first half with a couple of more free throws and another swat, but the Jayhawks still trailed by eight points, 34-26.
Right off the whistle to start the second period, Peterson missed on another jump shot, though he found the bottom of the net with his third and final three-pointer at the 15:35 mark. The next few minutes of the half saw Peterson continue to miss from the field while grabbing boards. His first two-point field goal finally came at the 10:18 mark with a floater, before he was subbed out right after.
With the final minutes of the second round of March Madness underway, Peterson returned to the game at the 8:51 mark after a brief rest. He continued to inflict damage from the free-throw line before eventually making his final field goal with a layup to put Kansas within six points, 58-52. Peterson then knotted the game up at 65-all with a pair of free throws, but Red Storm’s Dylan Darling made the game-winning layup to beat Kansas, 67-65.

The Kansas Jayhawks Had Only Nine Three-Pointers In The 2026 Big Dance, Seven From Darryn Peterson
In a post by user @FDSportsbook on X/Twitter, it was shown that the whole Kansas Jayhawks roster made only nine three-pointers in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, seven of them belonging to Darryn Peterson.
It seems this could be a factor as to why the Jayhawks prematurely exited this year’s March Madness. Kansas finishes the year with an overall record of 24-11 (12-6 Big 12).
