Concerns Mount for Darryn Peterson as Major Red Flag Clouds His NBA Draft Projection

Darryn Peterson is one of the best players in this year’s freshman class. In every game he has played so far, he has shown that his hype is valid. As he was coming out of high school, there was a lot of noise around how high his ceiling is. However, his college career has not gone as well as he had hoped.

In the 15 games in his freshman season, Peterson is averaging 20 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. He has had some brilliant performances. However, his biggest problem has been his game time. He has struggled with multiple injuries and has played an average of only 26.9 minutes. There have hardly been any games where he crossed the 30-minute mark.

Peterson has suffered hamstring injuries and has experienced cramps in multiple games. The situation has gotten to a point where Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self dubbed it “disappointing” when Darryn Peterson called himself out of a game due to cramping. This has also affected his case for the NBA Draft. He was very much considered a top-3 pick along with AJ Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer. However, due to all his injuries and availability struggles, that draft spot is in serious jeopardy.

Former NBA pro Jay Williams has shared his thoughts on Darryn Peterson’s situation.

“It doesn’t feel like he really wants to be there. It doesn’t feel, and maybe this is a byproduct, KP, of when kids get paid NIL, and they get money upfront, right? If that’s the way it goes, it’s like, well, if I don’t want to be here, I get my money up front, then I can check out when I want to check out. That’s what this feels like. I don’t know if it is that, but damn sure on paper it looks like that,” Jay Williams said.

Fans React to Jay Williams Calling Out Kansas’ Darryn Peterson

Fans online were divided on NBA pro Jay Williams’ take on Darryn Peterson.

“Ummmmm he probably doesn’t want to play college ball,” one fan said.

“If you think about it, dude can score 20 easy in a half because he’s more rested than everyone else who’s played most of the season. It’s calculated,” another commented.

“We should also understand that he is a kid and he probably has a lot of people in his ear. Ace Bailey also ‘didn’t want to play in Utah,'” one fan replied.

“Jay said the same about Ant early too and look how that turned out. Peterson clears when he’s right injuries happen, motor questions are overblown,” another commented.
