3 Shocking Moments From 2026 NBA Draft Night

#1. Aday Mara selection signals OKC’s effort to offset Wemby threat

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama crushed the OKC Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. The forward minimized the impact of Isaiah Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren in the front court. Given how the Spurs are rostered, it seems inevitable that the Thunder will meet Wembanyama before they can reach the NBA Finals.

To address the issue in front court, the Thunder surprised many by picking Michigan center Aday Mara at No. 12. He’s 7-foot-4 and is probably OKC’s answer to Wemby’s threat in the Western Conference. The interest was always there, but no one expected Mara to be picked this high.

OKC can allow him to develop in his rookie season before making him an integral frontcourt player.

    #2. Knicks’ Draft Night Retreat

The Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years after they defeated the Spurs in the 2026 Finals.

Their strategy for draft night was simple. They were happy with their core and traded out of the first round. They also moved back in the second round, highlighting their preference for future second-round picks, international rights, and cash flexibility over immediate rookie help.

Some also believe that the Knicks’ draft night retreat may have had something to do with the league’s new cap environment, which impacted the strategy of several teams during the draft.

#3. Cameron Carr falling to No. 24

The biggest draft snub was given to Cameron Carr, who remained undrafted deep into the first round.

Carr was notably viewed as a lottery pick. Despite that, teams passed on him repeatedly before the Knicks came calling at No. 24. The Knicks did not ultimately keep him. New York moved Carr in a draft-night sequence that ended with the Lakers acquiring his rights.

It was a striking letdown for Carr, whose scoring upside is immense. He can create his own shots and offer size on the wings.

Meanwhile, for the Lakers, this could present them with the opportunity to nurture a pick who was viewed as a lottery pick.
