Shortly after the Wizards selected BYU star AJ Dybantsa in the 2026 NBA draft, Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd raised concerns about Washington’s roster and whether the franchise is positioned to maximize Dybantsa’s potential.
On “The Herd” on Wednesday, Cowherd wondered whether the Wizards are the right fit for the prospect:
“AJ Dybantsa is a sensational player. But what’s the timeline? I mean, Trae Young is going to take shots; it’s not going to help you on the other side of the floor. Not that AJ is a great defender, but he’s a willing defender. And, you know, Anthony Davis, what are we doing here?”
His biggest concern was around Trae Young. The Wizards signed Young to a long-term extension this week, and Cowherd believes that move could complicate Dybantsa’s growth.
He also questioned Anthony Davis’ role in Washington’s plans, pointing to the veteran’s age and injury history.
“I think Washington is a tough place to be at,” Cowherd said. “I’m not sure. I mean, hell Michael Jordan went there at one point, and that was a mess. I mean, everybody loved Michael. He went to Washington, even his teammates hated him. Like, it’s just one of those places that struggles to land the plane. And winning is hard in this league, and it takes a long time.”
Wizards Believe AJ Dybantsa Can Transform the Franchise
Despite Cowherd’s concerns, the Wizards remain extremely confident in Dybantsa.
According to The Athletic’s David Aldridge, Washington’s front office saw Dybantsa as the best prospect to enter the NBA since Victor Wembanyama.
General manager Will Dawkins said that Dybantsa’s versatility played a major role in the decision.
“I think, for us, it was about making sure we picked the right player that would fit with our group and have an opportunity to push us forward,” Dawkins said. “And at the end of the day, it became pretty clear that he was that guy, just because of his versatility.
“We’re looking for guys who can continue to make decisions, with the ball, without the ball, but also be dual impact players at both ends. He’s a superior athlete. By our measures, he’s the best athlete we’ve tested since Michael and I have been here.”
Last season Dybantsa averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
Now, he joins a Wizards team that has Young, Davis, Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly and more.
Whether Cowherd’s concerns prove right or wrong, remains to be seen. For now, the Wizards are betting that Dybantsa can become the franchise cornerstone.
