Kansas Jayhawks guard Darryn Peterson has seemingly responded to his coach, Bill Self, about his availability throughout the 2025-26 season. On Monday, Feb. 23, @espn on Instagram uploaded a carousel post that showcases a recent report by college basketball writer Myron Medcalf, in which both Peterson and Self were quoted.
According to the post, Self suggested that he had not gotten the chance to coach Peterson and unlock their true potential together as a coach-player tandem. Peterson responded that while there have been a lot of onlookers commenting on his health, he’d play every game if he physically could.
“Have I really had the chance to coach you yet?” Self asked Peterson, with the latter responding to it by being quoted as saying, “Everybody’s got an opinion on it. But basketball is my life. If I could have been out there every game this year, I would have.”
Peterson was also asked whether he would play in this year’s NCAA tournament. He replied:
“Let’s do it. That’s the goal.”
“Darryn Peterson is still No. 1 on our NBA draft big board 👀,” @espn on Instagram captioned with a couple of emojis.
Peterson has been dealing with lingering issues with both his upper and lower body, conditioning, and has even dealt with an illness to some extent. Even with this, he is expected to be at least a top-three pick in the 2026 NBA Draft in June. Nevertheless, Peterson has reasserted that his focus remains on bringing his Kansas-based program a national championship, which they last won back in 2022.
Darryn Peterson Has Played In 16 Of The 27 Kansas Jayhawks Games This 2025-26 Campaign
As it stands, Darryn Peterson has played in just 16 of the Kansas Jayhawks’ 27 games so far in the 2025-26 season.
Despite missing 11 games, Peterson remains the team’s primary scorer and has helped the Jayhawks uncork an overall record of 20-7 (10-4 Big 12), good for the No. 3 seed in the 2026 Big 12 conference standings.
Kansas is set to face the Houston Cougars on Monday, Feb. 23.
