Kansas suffered its 7th loss of the season as the Jayhawks fell to unranked Cincinnati 84-68 on Saturday. Bill Self and co.’s season has seemingly been put in peril as the 8th-ranked Jayhawks are on course for a lower seeding in the NCAA tournament. All the issues surrounding star freshman Darryn Peterson’s fitness has only added to the chaos that everyone is seeing in Kansas.
Bill Self recently said that matchups matter more than seeding in the NCAA tournament. However, the way things are going, not many people have any confidence in the Jayhawks’ chances of being a real contender for the national championship.
Self has the pressure of managing and coaching two separate teams at the moment – one with Darryn Peterson and one without. There have been a lot of doubts over his injuries. Moreover, there have also been questions around his mentality and his willingness to play. Many believe this whole chaos is directly affecting his draft chances.
Peterson played vs Cincinnati, and it was a rare game when he played over 30 minutes. However, it was a very underwhelming performance for the Kansas star. He got 17 points with just 4 rebounds and 1 assist.
The Bearcats pulled off an impressive upset as they won 84-68. This 16-point loss broke a 53-year-old Kansas record as it was its biggest home defeat to an unranked opponent during that time.
The previous heaviest home setback was a 15-point loss to Long Beach State in 1993. The 16-point loss was also the fourth-heaviest home defeat for Kansas under Bill Self.
Fans react to Bill Self and Kansas’ loss to Cincinnati
Fans trolled Kansas and predicted their shaky future.
“Kansas isn’t world beaters they’re a pretty average team that plays above their ceiling on occasion, thy have 7 losses,” one fan said.
“Talk about an out-of-the-blue result – there was nothing at all to indicate that something like this was coming,” another fan said sarcastically.
“Should be good enough to move them up a few seed lines,” another commented.
“So embarrassing, fire him for cause!” One fan suggested.
“Joke of a conference,” another stated.
Self and the Jayhawks will need to bounce back quickly as they face No. 2-ranked Houston next on Monday and No. 4 Arizona on Saturday.
