Luke Murray spent the last few seasons as an assistant coach of the UConn Huskies as part of Dan Hurley’s coaching staff. In March, he took a step forward in his career after being named the new head coach of the Boston College Eagles.
On the latest episode of “Inside College Basketball” with Joe Rothstein, Luke Murray discussed his upcoming debut with the new program. He also revealed the one lesson he’s taking with him from his time with Dan Hurley and the UConn Huskies.
“It will be really hard,” Murray said about rebuilding the Boston College Eagles. “I mean, obviously, that’s part of the challenge that any coach faces when they take over a situation that needs to be rebuilt, as the Boston College program does.
“But, you know, I’m sort of drawn towards those experiences. Not so much think about how different it is. Try to draw inspiration and really look back on some of the things that we’ve experienced over the course of the last handful of years at Connecticut. And try to bring a lot of that winning formula to BC.
“(I’m going to implement) the way that Coach Hurley runs the program first and foremost. The standard that he sets every single day. Expectations across the board from players and staff alike. To me, I think that’s the first thing that I think about when I think about transitioning things from Connecticut to BC. And the style of play, in terms of the way we’re going to play the offense in particular. That’s the model for us.”
Luke Murray was part of Dan Hurley’s coaching staff when they won back-to-back national championships between 2022 and 2024. Last season, they finished as runners-up after losing the season finale to Michigan.
Luke Murray expresses excitement about upcoming journey with Boston College after stint with Dan Hurley and UConn
The Boston College Eagles announced Luke Murray as the new head coach back in March. During his introductory press conference, he expressed his excitement about the opportunity and his first gig as a head coach.
“I am deeply honored and incredibly grateful to lead the Boston College Men’s basketball program,” Murray said. “BC is a university with a prestigious academic reputation and a storied basketball tradition.
“Boston College alumni and fans will find our program defined by a standard of excellence, and our team will play an unselfish, tough, and highly competitive brand of basketball. I am excited to get to work and build this proud program.”
Earl Grant served as the coach of the Eagles for the last five seasons. He put up a 72-92 overall record.
