Being the son of an NBA star could mean that a player is living in his father’s shadow. This has also been tagged to Cameron Boozer, who despite being the No. 3 high school star and a possible No. 1 draft pick, was also has constantly been compared to his father, former NBA All-Star and NCAA champion Carlos Boozer.
However, Cameron Boozer has proven that he is more than that, helping lead the Duke Blue Devils to an Elite Eight appearance and is one of the most talked-about college stars that have entered the NBA draft. He sat down with Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fisher and opened up about his father’s legacy and how he is forging a different path.
“I wouldn’t say I wanted to follow him, I would say I want to make my own path,” he said. “Most people come up to me now and they call me Cameron before they go, ‘Oh, you’re Boozer’s kid.’ I think [Cayden and I] already made our own names, but for a long time it wasn’t like that.”
“It’s a blessing to come from a family like we do. My dad has been to where we want to go. I wouldn’t say it’s annoying at all. But as a competitor, as someone who wants to be great, you also want to have your own story,” he added.
Cameron Boozer has been on a tear over the last few years, winning the Nike EYBL Peach Jam for three years in a row with Nightridas Elite and then winning the high school basketball national title. He then went to Duke where he was seen as one of the biggest stars of the game during his sole season at Durham.
Cameron Boozer’s Mom Says He Does Not Feel The Weight Of His Name
During that same interview, CeCe Boozer, the mother of Cameron Boozer, also spoke with Bryan Fisher and revealed that the pressure of bearing his father’s name does not bother him at all.
“I don’t think he feels the weight of the last name. I’ve felt that’s more about public perception than it is true for him. He’s always been his own man and wanted to run his own race,” he said.
CeCe has since divorced Carlos, but she is more than aware of her ex’s impact on her son’s career. She noted that he knows that Cameron will always be compared to his father but he sees himself differently.
