Why Was Dan Hurley Fined $25,000? UConn Coach’s ‘Unsportsmanlike Conduct’ Brings Trouble

UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley was handed a hefty $25,000 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct during his team’s most recent game. On Saturday, March 7, Hurley and his Huskies lost 62-68 to Shaka Smart’s Marquette Golden Eagles on the Milwaukee Bucks’ home court, the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Unfortunately for Hurley, it has since gone viral that he got into a tussle with an official, as he was captured on broadcast going up to the said referee and shouting in his face. This is because during a Huskies possession, Hurley felt that one of his players got fouled, and no whistle was blown.

As a result, the tenured tactician was penalized, according to a report by Matt Fortuna.

“Initial speculation on the game broadcast indicated possible contact between Hurley and the official; however, a review by the conference office of the officials’ game report and available game footage could not confirm physical contact,” Fortuna’s report wrote.

While Hurley was ejected from the game against the Golden Eagles, his team could not defeat its opponent. The Huskies received an upset defeat at the hands of Marquette by six points, 68-62. The Connecticut-based program will now head over to this year’s Big East conference tournament with an overall record of 27-4 (17-3 Big East) as the second seed in the 2026 conference standings.

Dan Hurley Said He Didn’t Bump The Referee

In a video posted by @cbbonfox on Instagram, Hurley was asked during his post-game press conference about his ejection from the game against the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Hurley asserted that he does not think he bumped the referee, and explained that everything that happened between him and the official was purely verbal.

“Didn’t think I bumped the ref. I thought I got close to like yelling at John. I mean, if John thinks that, ‘Yeah, I bumped him,’ then he’ll say I bumped him. But I don’t think that I bumped the official. I think I yelled, you know, into the back of his head, ‘Foul, foul.’ And then, yeah, I mean, you’re, listen, the officiating for us, you know, it is what it is. You know, in this league, I’m not gonna comment on that,” Hurley explained.
