In the Elite Eight matchup between UConn and Duke, Dan Hurley’s team looked dead and out.
However, they showed extreme grit, and Braylon Mullins attempted his only three-pointer from the logo in the last second, snatching the victory from Duke. So when asked about Mullins’ availability for next season, Hurley said he wants him to stay.
“I think that the world has changed. There’s not this, you know, this pressure to go to the NBA now because of the money situation. He, you know, players like Braylon will probably make more money at UConn next year than he would if he was the 15th pick. So, uh, you know, those are the things that you have to weigh. How badly do I want to get out of college and get to the NBA?” Dan Hurley said.
Hurley’s UConn lost the national championship game to Michigan. It was a tough loss, especially for a title game. The final ended 69-63 in Dusty May and the Wolverines’ favor. However, even in that defeat, UConn did try its best to complete the comeback. Unfortunately, it was not enough.
Dan Hurley sends advice to college players ahead of NBA Draft
When Dan Patrick asked Hurley about the transfer portal, he joked:
“Well, I mean, the line is starting to form. Do it’s the it’s the supermarket. It’s the deli section. I don’t know what number.”
“It’s such a um you know for I think for for teams like us and and the teams that played in the in the final four national championship game it’s like it hits you like an avalanche because your season really just ended, you know just like literally two days ago and now you’ve got to make all these decisions. You’ve got to help your players make monumental decisions,” Hurley added.
He also suggested that the college players should consider where they would end up in the NBA Draft. According to him, it makes more sense for players to declare for the NBA Draft early if they are guaranteed to go top 15 or top 18.
“The biggest mistake that you can make right now as a college basketball player is going to the draft too early and not staying long enough in college,” he said. “He also added that players do not like to college players for long, as it is not a setup like the NBA, which obviously attracts players more.”
