The Duke Blue Devils have lost their first player to the transfer portal, and it’s Darren Harris, a former four-star recruit coming out of Fairfax, Virginia, in the 2024 class. Harris returned to Durham for an increased role, but it never happened under head coach Jon Scheyer.
This past season, he only played 9.7 minutes per game, averaging 3.3 points, 0.8 rebounds and 0.4 assists. Let’s take a look at five teams where Harris could revive his career.
Top 5 Landing Spots for Duke Star Darren Harris
-
Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas is being linked as a potential destination for Darren Harris, given his recruiting ties and familiarity with the program. Arkansas can give Harris something that Duke couldn’t. The Razorbacks might just have an opening for an athletic guard to complement their fast-paced offense.
2. Georgetown Hoyas
Transfer portal candidates more often than not choose their next destination to be closer to home. If that’s the case with Harris as well, then the Georgetown Hoyas are an option for him.
Since the program is in rebuilding mode, there could be a good number of minutes available for him. The Hoyas would let Harris develop as the primary option on the roster.
3. Virginia Tech Hokies
Another regional team tied to his recruiting roots is the Virginia Tech Hokies. Their system values wing guards and scorers. The comfort of home could allow him to express himself more freely on the court.
4. Maryland Terrapins
The Terrapins are facing a lot of questions entering the transfer portal and Harris could probably be the answer to one of them. They need players to increase depth for perimeter shooters. His Big Ten exposure could be valuable to Maryland, who are looking for players with his profile.
Moreover, Harris would likely receive expanded minutes on a notable program.
5. SMU Mustangs
The Mustangs are on a surge both on and off the floor. It is an emerging program with NIL flexibility. At SMU, Harris gets the opportunity to be among the primary scorers. While it’s not a blue-blood program, that also means there will be less competition for minutes.
At this stage of his career, Harris should look for a program that can give him a featured role and significant minutes.
