Kiyan Anthony concluded his first season with the Syracuse Orange earlier this month. The son of NBA and Syracuse legend Carmelo Anthony, Kiyan followed in his father’s footsteps by joining his alma mater.
Syracuse struggled a lot this season. They had the fifth-worst record in the conference, going 6-12, 15-17 overall, and ended the season on a six-game losing streak. Kiyan received limited play time in 29 games.
He averaged 8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game while shooting just under 40% from the field. But this was his first experience in college basketball, and the expectations are that he will come back better next season.
Kiyan has already started working on his game. He recently posted a media dump on Instagram, which included pictures from his practices and games.
“i had to tighten up, couldn’t keep my head down too long,” he captioned the post.
Kiyan has a strong support system behind him. His mom and dad are his biggest cheerleaders, and they show love to him every opportunity they get. His mother, La La, took to the comment section to hype him up.
“Always ur #1 fan..it’s GO TIME!!!” she wrote.
She left another comment, “I love you!!!!” on the post, three hours later. Melo also dropped a comment for his son. He wrote, “You know exactly what to do.” LeBron James’ youngest son, Bryce, also showed his support for Kiyan.
“Brudda man,” he wrote. While Kiyan develops his game and gets ready to make a bigger impact next season, he has enough people in his corner who will continue to root for him.
Carmelo Anthony on What Kiyan Anthony Needs to Work On
Melo has been through every phase that Kiyan will experience in his basketball career. It’s one of the perks of having arguably one of the best players of all time in your corner. Melo understands what’s holding his son back from making a splash.
On a recent episode of 7PM in Brooklyn, he said Kiyan needs to work on his pace.
“I want him to play at a Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] pace, I want him to play at a [Tyrese] Haliburton pace,” he said.
Melo said that it’s obvious that Kiyan needs to get stronger, but he’s going to get there in due time. He is too young to focus only on his strength. As of now, he needs to work on his pace and model his game around the names he mentioned to get to another level.
