While things have been improving at Provo, BYU still lost a lot of players to the transfer portal. The team had a relatively good season but floundered in the NCAA Tournament despite freshman forward AJ Dybantsa putting up monster numbers nightly.
With Dybantsa being a one-and-done and heading to the NBA draft, the Cougars are now looking to the transfer portal. It is still relatively early, but so far, BYU has not recruited anybody to replace the six players they are losing.

- Freshman Center Xavion Staton: Signed with Oregon State
- Junior Small Forward Tyler Mrus
- Junior Combo Guard KJ Perry
- Junior Small Forward Kennard Davis
- Redshirt Freshman Small Forward Dominique Diomande
- Sophomore Point Guard Rob Wright
The biggest loss for BYU would be Rob Wright, a sophomore point guard who is reportedly getting offers from big programs like Kentucky and Louisville. He is rated a four-star transfer by On3 Rivals.
Another big player BYU is losing is seven-footer Xavion Staton, a four-star transfer who was also AJ Dybantsa’s high school teammate. He has now signed with Oregon State, which means the Cougars will be losing a big presence in the paint next season.
Kennard Davis, a junior, is also moving on. He had been rated a three-star transfer, and it is still unclear where he will land. Wherever he goes, though, he is expected to bring some leadership heading into his senior year, and he is also a good three-point threat.
What BYU Needs From the Transfer Portal
With the loss of Staton and possibly Abdullah Ahmed, the Cougars will need to dip into the transfer portal for a center. However, they need a “rugged” big man who can take a hit, especially in the wild west known as the Big 12.
With many players leaving, including Rob Wright, BYU will also need a shooter who can be a threat anywhere on the court. They might also look for an athletic scorer to replace AJ Dybantsa.
