Bill Self is one of the longest-serving coaches in college basketball. He started his head coaching career back in 1993 and has been the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks since 2003. Self recently dropped a cryptic message about his coaching future.
After the Jayhawks lost in the second round against St John’s Red Storm, Self said that he would make a decision about his coaching future soon.
“I love what I do, I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I’ll get back home, and it’ll all be discussed,” he said.
Fans think that it’s an early indication of Self’s retirement from coaching. However, former Arkansas assistant coach and director of basketball operations Matt Zimmerman believes Self should go to North Carolina.
“Coach Bill Self should go to North Carolina. Do what Coach Calipari did and reinvigorate yourself at a great place,” he posted on X.
Zimmerman is suggesting that Self should consider leaving Kansas for North Carolina, especially with the opening created by Davis’ firing. The idea is that a fresh start at another big program like UNC could help him reset his career.
The reason why he brought Calipari into the equation was that he left Kentucky after years of pressure and brought new energy to Arkansas, and he has had a successful run so far. He believes that’s exactly what Self needs right now.
The North Carolina Tar Heels recently fired Hubert Davis, leaving a vacancy for the next head coach. It’ll be interesting to see what Self decides.
Bill Self on Early Exit from March Madness
Self has battled health issues recently, but he believes he’s much better now. Although he’s not completely healthy yet, he is making great progress and has been feeling better than he has in the recent past.
As for his coaching future, he made it clear after the loss that he wasn’t going to make any statements.
“So I try to focus on this season and try to get us to a second weekend, which we failed at. So I’ll go back now and break it down and see where that leads,” he said.
Self said that he was disappointed by the result and felt bad for his players.
