Bill Self is the best-paid coach in college basketball, with a current net worth of some $30 million. Self has an unusual agreement with the University of Kansas, in which he has a lifelong five-year contract with the school. The contract renews automatically every year for one year on March 31. This means he has at least four years of contract left at any time.
While his base salary begins at $500,000, along with a $100,000 signing bonus, it’s in the bonuses and incentives that he makes his real money. According to CBS Sports, he’s set to make $53 million in his current contract. According to Yahoo Sports, here are the payments he has received and will receive in his current contract just for his coaching duties:
- 2023-24 season: $4.2 million
- 2024-25 season: $4.4 million
- 2025-26 season: $4.55 million
- 2026-27 season: $4.85 million
- 2027-28 season: $5 million
- Each season beyond 2027-28: $5 million
Self also receives a plethora of bonuses based on the Jayhawks’ achievements each season.

The NIL revolution has also been good for the Kansas head coach. According to Yahoo Sports, the coach is receiving the following payments for name, image, and likeness.

- 2024-25 season: $2.5 million
- 2025-26 season: $2.57 million
- 2026-27 season: $2.65 million
- 2027-28 season: $2.7 million
- Each season beyond 2027-28: $5 million
Bill Self is Considering Retirement Following the Defeat to St. John’s
According to industry sources, the Kansas Jayhawks coach is considering retirement following the team’s defeat to the St. John’s Red Storm in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Following the game, he said the following about his future to the press:
“I’ll get back and get with family and visit and see what’s going on,” Self said after the Jayhawks lost 67-65 on a buzzer-beater in the second round of the NCAA tournament. “I love what I do, I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I’ll get back home, and it’ll all be discussed.”
Current reports are that he’s expected to announce his retirement from the sport this Wednesday.
