Former US President Barack Obama, whose daughter Sasha Obama studied at Michigan, congratulated the Wolverines on winning their second national title since 1989. Head coach Dusty May’s boys defeated the UConn Huskies 69-63 in the finals Monday night at Indianapolis.
In his congratulatory post, Obama specially mentioned May and Elliot Cadeau, who led the Wolverines with 19 points, two assists and three rebounds in 30 minutes. The guard shot 5-11 from the floor, including 1-4 from beyond the arc and 8-9 from the free throw line. Cadeau also had two steals in the win.
“Congratulations to @CoachDustyMay, Elliot Cadeau, and @UMichBBall on winning their first title since 1989! This team dominated the tournament from start to finish. Well deserved. Go Blue!” Obama wrote on X.
While Obama didn’t go to Michigan, the former president was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2010 when he visited the school to deliver a spring commencement address at Michigan Stadium. Two years later, he returned to campus to speak about college affordability and education policy. His daughter started studying there in 2019.
Earlier, Obama also congratulated the UCLA women’s basketball program for winning its first-ever NCAA title after defeating South Carolina on Sunday night in Phoenix, Arizona.
“Congratulations to Lauren Betts and the sensational seniors at @UCLAWBB
for winning their first NCAA Championship!” he wrote.
Dusty May’s Special Shout-out To All Former Michigan Players After Winning Title in 37 Years
The long wait for the Michigan program to once again be called national champions ended after 37 years on Monday night. Dusty May, who took over the 8-24 team in 2024, made the Sweet 16 run last season and secured their second NCAA championship this season.
May took this opportunity to thank all the Michigan players associated with the program over the past 37 years to feel blessed and grateful.
“I want to shout-out all the former Michigan players, this was for them,” he said.
May’s pockets are about to get heavier, thanks to a $400,000 bonus for winning the national championship. The head coach will be motivated to defend the title next season since continued success ensures high pay and a bonus.
