Koa Peat has been one of the highlights of the season for the Arizona Wildcats. In the first season of his college career, the power forward is showing that whenever he is given an opportunity, he will produce good numbers.
After 25 games, he is averaging 18.8 points with 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists while shooting over 54% from the field. He dropped a season-high 24 points against the Arizona State Sun Devils last month.
The Wildcats will face the Baylor Bears tomorrow at Foster Pavilion. There’s a stark difference in the record of these two teams, but still, a win against Baylor in the final stretch of the regular season will be great for Arizona.
The Wildcats might have to go into that game without Peat. CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein recently reported that Peat is listed as questionable for the next game due to a leg injury. His availability will likely be a game-time decision.
“Koa Peat has a muscle strain in his lower leg area. He will be re-evaluated next week and will return to the court when cleared by the medical staff,” Arizona Basketball posted last Tuesday.
Other than Peat, the Wildcats have listed Anthony Dell’Orso as questionable due to undisclosed reasons. Whereas Dwayne Aristode, for undisclosed reasons, has been ruled out for the game against Baylor.
It’s worth noting that Peat hasn’t played a game since the 75-78 overtime loss against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. In that game, Peat played just 11 minutes and scored two points from free throws.
Koa Peat is a Big Part of Tommy Lloyd’s Postseason Plans
Peat’s injury struggles have become a major point of concern for head coach Tommy Lloyd. Last week, he spoke on Peat’s recovery and stated that he’s being assessed regularly as they’re trying to figure out his timeline.
“Not going there,” Lloyd said. “Just (that he’s) probably not playing Saturday. I’ll go that far, and we’ll see how it progresses.”
Lloyd is being very cautious and doesn’t want to rush Peat back on the court. He is part of Arizona’s long-term plans, and the coach understands the risks if he’s rushed back.
“Obviously, we have big dreams, too. When we get to the postseason, and he’s a big part of it, we just want to do everything we can in our power to make sure that he’s at 100%,” he said.
Peat will likely miss the game against Baylor. And with proper rest, he might be ready for the postseason matchups.
