BYU Cougars star AJ Dybantsa is being accused of stat-padding in his and his team’s most recent regular-season game, as onlookers consider it as what caused their downfall. On Tuesday, Feb. 24, Dybantsa and the rest of coach Kevin Young‘s 2025-26 Cougars squad went up against coach Johnny Dawkins’ UCF Knights in the former’s home floor, the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.
In the process, Dybantsa had a finishing stat line of a game-high 29 points on 11-of-22 overall shooting, to go along with eight rebounds in 36 minutes of playing time. As he finished the game with no assists and BYU struggled in the final minutes of the matchup, Dybantsa is then believed by many in the college basketball world to have actually stat-padded his way to the aforementioned stat line.
College fans and spectators then accuse Dybantsa of stat-padding, which is deemed to be the leading factor as to why his team did not perform to their usual standard.
“AJ DYBANTSA IS A STAT-PADDING GARBAGE TIME MERCHANT,” one fan exclaimed.
“Some of the most egregious garbage-time stat padding that I’ve ever seen by BYU’s AJ Dybantsa tonight,” another fan pointed out.
“Dybantsa stat-pad to cover up the stinker,” another user said.
“Dybantsa just stat-padding now take him out,” a user shared.
Other users all over X/Twitter decided to bring up the bigger picture if it was determined that Dybantsa actually padded his stats.
“Seriously need to look into AJ Dybantsa. His line was 30.5 and wants to go crazy last min of the game down 20. Insane stat padding but also I’m sure he knows his line was 30.5
@NCAA investigate him please,” one user explained.
“Been coming to games in the Marriott center since the early 90s, this is the single worst lack of effort I’ve ever witnessed here. This team should be ashamed fans paid their hard earned money to watch that,” another user wrote.
“I cant even get upset that was just Hysterical and pathetic. Sim to next season please,” a user posted.
Dybantsa is currently in his likely one-and-done year under the tutelage of coach Young and the Cougars program, as he is projected to at least be a top-three pick in the 2026 NBA Draft later this year. So far in the 2025-26 campaign, he is averaging 24.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.1 steals in around 33.7 minutes played per contest. He has helped the Cougars to a current overall record of 20-8 (8-7 Big 12).
The BYU Cougars Lost To The UCF Knights By Seven Points
Perhaps the biggest disappointment of the BYU Cougars faithful stems from the fact that their team lost to the UCF Knights by seven points, 97-84, on their home court. The Cougars were down by double digits after the first half, 52-28, as their 56-point second-period effort was not enough to uncork the victory. BYU now sets its sights on a win against the West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, Feb. 28.
