Lane Kiffin Has His Say as Joey Aguilar Goes Legal on 2026 Eligibility for Tennessee

The Tennessee Volunteers quarterback, Joey Aguilar, has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in hopes of extending his college eligibility by one more year and being able to play for the Volunteers in the 2026 season.

If Aguilar is successful in this attempt, it’ll not only be beneficial for him but also for the program. The Tennessee Volunteers weren’t able to add any star quarterback to their roster during the transfer window.

As of now, Aguilar is their biggest hope for the next season. If he gets another year of eligibility, the Vols will have a quality quarterback to compete in the next season. Interestingly, Lane Kiffin believes Aguilar should be declared eligible.

Kiffin spends a lot of time on social media. He often reposts or interacts with topics surrounding college football or football in general. So, when the Aguilar news hit his timeline, he responded with advice for the quarterback.

    “Why not?? 1-800-TomMarsLaw,” he wrote.

As per a court filing obtained by Knox News, Aguilar’s complaint asks the court to allow another year of eligibility while stating that the NCAA is robbing the program of an incredible quarterback and Aguilar of millions in compensation.

“After a breakout season as the Volunteers’ quarterback in 2025, the NCAA is blocking Aguilar from playing a fourth year of Division I football – depriving Tennessee of a gifted quarterback and robbing Aguilar of millions in compensation,” the complaint says.

The 24-year-old is seeking a temporary restraining order against the NCAA and an injunction that’ll allow him to be available for the Vols in the 2026 season. Aguilar had a stellar season in 2025 and wishes to aim for the title in his final year. He led the SEC with 3565 yards with 24 touchdown passes.

Tennessee Has a Spot for Joey Aguilar

The complaint made it clear that the program has a spot available for Aguilar in the next season. The complaint also doubled down on the compensation aspect, stating that the quarterback would earn approximately $2 million.

In case Aguilar fails to get another year of eligibility, the Vols will be left with George MacIntyre, Faizon Brandon, and Ryan Staub. One of these three will get the starting quarterback nod in the next season.

“Aguilar needs relief now, to know whether he should report to spring practice or prepare for the NFL draft,” the complaint says.

The reason why Aguilar is seeking a quick resolution is that his future remains uncertain for now.
