Urban Meyer Admits Having “Lots of Conversations” About Bryce Underwood With Kyle Whittingham as he Names QB’s Elite Qualities

Urban Meyer believes that Bryce Underwood is the man at Michigan. Speaking this Friday on the Triple Option Podcast, the former coach shared his opinion that Underwood has the exact athletic build he would like a quarterback to have.

He shared with Mark Ingram that he had spoken with Kyle Whittingham about Bryce Underwood’s development for the Michigan Wolverines. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’ve had a lot of conversations with Coach Whitt… If God said, ‘I’m gonna go make a quarterback,’ it’s going to look a lot like Bryce Underwood as far as size, athleticism. He’s a great kid. He works at it. Are there some things missing? Sure. I’m gonna say they’ll develop him.”

In his freshman season at Ann Arbor, Underwood threw for 2428 passing yards, with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His QBR was 72.5, which ranked 29th among signal-callers in the nation.

Steve Deace on Kyle Whittingham’s process with Bryce Underwood

Urban Meyer told us the cookie-cutter public story the Michigan Wolverines want the public to know. Bryce Underwood is a great player, and they’re looking to develop him and stay with him. This might all be true, but it isn’t the whole truth, according to other reports.

Michigan Wolverines insider Steve Deace spoke on the Locked on Wolverines podcast this Thursday and revealed that the school’s coaching staff would have no trouble moving on from Underwood:

“He’s going to have to be the better quarterback on the field for at least three of those games, at least two at the most, for us to at least have any chance at a playoff whatsoever,” Deace said on the Locked on Wolverines podcast on July 9. “If he can’t deliver, I’m just going to tell you, this staff will absolutely move on. He’s a ton of money. There are a ton of guys waiting in the portal,

He also pointed to one possible replacement option, which Whittingham could consider:

“Like one in Utah right now (Devon Dampier) who’s going to get his degree after this year and gets a fifth year with the new five-for-five [rule] and knows the system. They’re (Michigan staff) not going to just sit here and wait.”

Deace also pointed out that the coach cannot afford a two-year process to get Michigan back on track.
