Kirby Smart Sees Recruit Face Roadblock As 4-Star Prospect Gets Ruled Ineligible for 2026 HS Season

Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs have been on a tear over the last few weeks. They are one of the most dominant programs in the recruiting market and have landed commitments from several top players.

Smart’s offseason efforts have put the Bulldogs in a comfortable position as far as their roster strength and depth are concerned. However, Georgia recently received some bad news related to a key Class of 2027 commitment.

Four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier has been ruled ineligible for the 2026 high school season, according to Rivals. Nussmeier transferred to Denton (Texas) Ryan High School from Flower Mound for his senior season during the offseason, and that transfer made him ineligible, according to a Tuesday ruling.

“The reason for Nussmeier’s ineligibility stems from the quarterback’s decision to transfer schools recently. The transfers took place within the state of Texas, which were ultimately what caused the ruling,” SI reported.

It’s a big setback for the Bulldogs and Kirby Smart. Nussmeier was the only quarterback in Smart’s 2027 recruiting class. He committed to the Bulldogs on June 5, the same day he took an official visit, which showed how impressed he was.

Nevertheless, it’s highly unlikely that the setback will affect Nussmeier’s commitment to the program.

Other than the four-star QB, Smart has landed some incredible talent this year. The list includes running back Kemon Spell, tight end Jaxon Dollar, offensive tackle Kelsey Adams, offensive tackle Ty Johnson, offensive lineman Abraham Eisenhower, running back Noah Parker, linebacker Temorris Campbell, defensive lineman Waylon Wooten, wide receiver Taurean Rawlins, offensive tackle DJ Dotson and offensive tackle Kennedee Jackson.

    Kirby Smart Supports SEC Breakaway

The landscape of college sports is constantly changing. We often see new rules, formats and even tournaments being introduced and implemented. Amid all the changes, Kirby Smart believes that the SEC should break away from the standard college sports structure.

“I’ve been a huge advocate that if we can’t find rules that everybody played by, then we should play by our own. I’m not afraid of that,” he said. “I’m not afraid to break away and say that our conference is strong enough to go out and have and play — I mean, like, if we could actually function and it financially would make our programs more stable, and we could support things financially.”

Smart said that if the SEC decides to break away, he’d like to see all sports move in the same direction. According to him, the biggest advantage in that situation would be that the SEC would be allowed to play by its own rules.
