Texas Tech transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby is mired in a gambling controversy for which the NCAA first deemed him ineligible permanently before the Texas court stepped in and gave him a temporary injunction to continue playing.
While Sorsby was with Indiana, the quarterback reportedly made thousands of sports bets totaling around $90,000, including roughly 40 wagers tied to games involving his own team.
Despite the startling revelation, Texas Tech chose to back him, even arguing that he deserves a second chance as he battles gambling addiction. Sorsby also checked into a residential treatment program earlier this year.
In the midst of all the turmoil surrounding him, whether good or bad, Sorsby appreciated the support from the Red Raiders and his close ones. After announcing he won’t play the 2026 season.
“I am grateful for the support from my family, my tech coaching staff, teammates, the community, and so many others who have encouraged me to address and learn more about this important issue. As my journey continues, I remain fully committed to and focused on being the best I can be, both on and off the field.” – he wrote with caption – “Forever Grateful For My Time At Texas Tech. Wreck Em. 🖤”

Big 12 Vs. Texas Tech Drama Escalated With Respect to Brendan Sorsby But There’s New Twist
A judge in Texas temporarily allowed Brendan Sorsby to play in 2026 despite the NCAA ruling. This has triggered backlash among conference members of the Big 12, with the NCAA also undermining the decision.
Moreover, with Texas Tech publicly supporting his rehabilitation rather than distancing itself from him, several programs are taking strict measures with respect to their association with the Red Raiders.
Multiple Big 12 schools have opposed the idea of Texas fielding the person tied to gambling. The fallout got even bigger this week. The conference has filed legal action to punish the program if they play the quarterback. Their argument is simple: Playing someone like Sorsby, who is associated with gambling, hurts the league’s competitive integrity and credibility.
However, the latest twist will calm down the situation. Sorsby has withdrawn from the college eligibility fight and plans to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. Texas Tech confirmed the same, as the whole issue is now put to rest.
