It finally happened. Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt is going to Baton Rouge to play for the LSU Tigers under Lane Kiffin. Thus ends the search of the Tigers for a quarterback, which was the most important asset they were missing for the 2026 season. With Garrett Nussmeier set to leave for the NFL, LSU had no one in place to take over starting duties for next season.
It seems that they have landed possibly the best option available. Leavitt was considered a five-star transfer by 247Sports and the best quarterback available in the portal. While his 2025 season was cut short due to an injury, Leavitt is still well thought of by the world of college football due to his role in leading the Sun Devils to a Big 12 championship and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024.
However, not every fan believes that he’s all that he’s made up to be. They didn’t lose time in sharing their thoughts online.
“LSU 6-6 Season with another bowl game loss loading🔥,” joked someone
Other fans seemed excited by what this could mean for the LSU Tigers.
“This offense is nasty 😭😭,” wrote one fan
Does this mean Ty Simpson is going to Miami?
“Ty Simpson, you ARE a Miami Hurricane 🙌🏽,” claimed someone
Some Miami fans were happy he didn’t go to the U.
“Thank you God miami didnt settle for him,” said a Hurricanes fan
Some fans were put off by the NIL details of the move.
“10 mil😛 for a injured qb,” joked someone
Others thought he wasn’t the key player he’s made out to be by the media.
“Got carried by Skatt and Tyson,” said someone
“He’s a good player, but is prone to injury and is completely over-rated!,” explained another fan
“12 WRs and a injured QB with no OLINE sounds like a great situation,” said someone sarcastically

Sam Leavitt’s Numbers for The Arizona State Sun Devils
Through one and a half seasons of playing time with Arizona State, Sam Leavitt recorded 4513 passing yards, with 34 touchdown passes. Specially praiseworthy is the fact that he only recorded nine interceptions in 2024 and 2025. He took 19 sacks in each season. It’s surprising that in 2025, he took the same sacks as in 2025, but with much more limited game time.
Leavitt has also proved to be a legit dual-threat quarterback, posting 749 rushing yards in 183 carries during his time at Tempe. In total, he has ten rushing touchdowns.
LSU will be Sam Leavitt’s third school, as he spent his freshman season at Michigan State.
What Is LSU Getting With Sam Leavitt?
The Arizona State Sun Devils actually did decently during the 2025 season, ending it with an 8-5 record, with many attributing their success to QB1 Sam Leavitt. However, his season ended with a foot injury, though he still put up some big numbers.
Leavitt passed for 2,885 yards and scored 24 touchdowns, only getting intercepted six times this season. He also had 443 rushing yards and had five rushing touchdowns, making him an effective dual-threat QB who can pass and who can rush.
