Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman has shown his coaching chops when he made the national final last year. He has firmly stated that he plans to stay at Notre Dame next year, but with so many NFL teams firing their coaches, a lot of teams from the league have not yet given up on the college coach just yet.
However, according to to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, several teams are still believing that he would be making the jump to the NFL for next season and is a top candidate for several teams. This is despite him saying he would be staying at Notre Dame.
There are a lot of openings for head coaches right now, and these include the Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, Las Vegas Raiders, and Miami Dolphins. There is also some talk of the Green Bay Packers possibly also firing their head coach, Matt LaFleur, after that historic collapse against the Chicago Bears in the Wild Card round.
Two other teams that may actually be courting Marcus Freeman are the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans, both of which are also looking for a new head coach. Any of the above-mentioned teams have very deep pockets with billionaire owners, which means they could up the ante and offer him a big paycheck despite being adamant about staying with the Fighting Irish.
Could Notre Dame Afford To Lose Marcus Freeman?
Marcus Freeman has been an essential part of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Program and has been good at his job, with the highlight being able to lead the team to the national championship game, losing to eventual champion Ohio State. He almost made the CFP this year, with many believing it should have been Notre Dame. With so many teams trying to poach him, could the Fighting Irish stand to lose their football head coach?
If he were to leave right now, the program could be in chaos, with Notre Dame possibly ending up with a coach who could not match his caliber if he were to leave. Replacing him could be a nightmare for Notre Dame, especially with his recent success, so the school would be in trouble if he leaves.
