Georgia receiver Zachariah Branch made it to the headlines for the wrong reasons on early Sunday morning in Athens just a few days before the 2026 NFL Draft.
Branch was arrested due to two charges including obstructing public sidewalks/streets and prowling and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Branch spent two hours in jail and posted $39 in bonds.
Talking about the situation on Monday, Emmanuel Acho shared his thoughts and highlighted that there are two types of arrests that are made in general, one that occur for breaking the law and the other for hurting the cop’s ego, pointing toward the notion that Branch’s arrest took place because of the latter reason.
Fans had mixed reactions to Acho’s take.
“Welcome to ACCPD. Just another day in Athens. It wasn’t 3am, he was booked at 1:30am. So it happened just after Midnight. It was on the Bike Race night which is an annual event and Athens was packed till early morning,” one fan reacted.
“You don’t challenge someone who can take away your freedom. Especially on the eve of the biggest day of your life. Thugs gonna thug,” another fan wrote.
“I think is a bit much to call a cop corrupt based on him citing branch. Now I understand why other athletes clown this dude. Trying too hard,” another fan added.
“He was arrested because he was blocking people on the sidewalk during an event in the area. He was asked to move several times and refused. Amazing how accountability for one’s actions in this country is non existent,” another fan pointed out.
“A week before the draft you think it’s a good idea to intentionally ignore a cop telling you to move? Gotta be smarter than that,” another fan highlighted.
“Not a serious charge but certainly a stupid one on Branch’s part. Shows a chip on the shoulder that might not translate well to following instructions on the field. Just sayin’,” another fan noted.
Inside Zachariah Branch’s Police Report After Arrest in Athens
The NFL Network got their hands on the police report released on Zachariah Branch’s arrest on Sunday morning.
The report revealed that Branch continued to stand on the sidewalk without attempting to move despite verbal commands from the police officer to move from blocking the sidewalk.
The police officer claimed that Branch smirked on his request and then stepped backwards and to the right after which he remained standing on the sidewalk, causing an obstruction and hindrance.
“Due to those actions and Zachariah Branch’s failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest for misdemeanor Obstruction of LEO and received a citation for Obstructing Public Sidewalks,” the report further mentioned.
Branch is projected to go in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft
